Flashpoint 5 Thoughts *Spoilers!*

So it's finally here. The event that, good or bad, superhero comic fans haven't been able to shut up about since it was announced what came after it. DC Comics cancelling their entire comic line-up and relaunching 52 brand-new number one issues. Seeing the resulting mess from DC trying to do little more than continue to make money and bring more new people into comics helped me get over internet forums , but other than that it's just been an anxious wait for me. This is a big deal in comics, the likes of which even Crisis on Infinite Earths couldn't quite bring to us. DC's taking a huge risk and if it fails, we might very well be without superhero comic books altogether. (Marvel isn't good enough that it can float them solo.) A lot of people might be happy with that. Me personally, I'd be miserable. Say what you want, but superheroes REALLY thrive in comic books. Everywhere else, they're a very niche part of the whole. At BEST we'll ...

Vampirella. Great Costume, or GREATEST Costume.

Spring Break's winding down. Gah. Sucks too. I've barely gotten any of the things I wanted to do done. And while that isn't wholly my fault, the fact remains I have...really, tonight and the weekend left. Ah well. The point of this was to bring up the fact that Dynamite acquired the character Vampirella. This is interesting for two reasons: 1.) Vampirella's a great character, and one of the first of her kind. Battling supernatural enemies to save humans. Plus her outfit rocks (though if they changed it I wouldn't complain--you don't need a bikini to be hot). 2.) The rights have gone to Dynamite, probably the biggest indy company out right now. Thus far I have enjoyed from them Alex Ross's Project Superpowers, and they possess a great track record for their licensed properties. They have a tendency to nab star creators for "from the ground, up" creations of the character's mythologies, and I love that. Plus if any character needs tha...

Comic-Con 2009: Big Deal?

So its Sunday night and we've just come through Comic-Con. There's lot of other panels that will be covered in a flood of info over the next two or three days, but near as I can tell, ALL the panels from the Big Two have been covered, so we're going to get into that. This is going to be a slightly different format than last year's Comic-Con "report" . Last year I basically broke it down to the things that had come out I was most excited about. Considering I read comics for superheroes and only half were superhero projects, I was pretty psyched about the whole CC last year, for them to think up five full projects I had some interest in. This year kinda went down pretty weird though. Maybe I'm wrong, but it kinda felt like they didn't want to announce anything huge for some reason. I feel like that, but why? ...I *know* they couldn't have thought their fans were all at the Twilight Panel. But there was a lot of things that weren't announce...

Invincible Iron Man

So, several months ago I was on here complaining about Marvel. Another bitch fest, this time about how they'd pretty much ruined Iron Man . I was right, but a lot of things have changed since then. So in the interest of being positive, I figured I'd talk about the changes Marvel has made since then and how positive they've been for my favorite Marvel superhero. And here is the rest of it. Actually, right around the time of my writing that particular story, they had just released a new comic book series, called Invincible Iron Man, created with the intent to capitalize on the successful movie. The series (written by "rising star" Matt Fraction and drawn by Salvador Larocca) was initially crafted to be a "partner" book to the other Iron Man book, taken over by the Knaufs (the writers of HBO's Carnivale ). This was meant to be the high-octane, big action Iron Man title, in contrast to the main title at the time, which had metamorphosed over the co...

Comic-Con 2008

Okay, this was supposed to be done two weeks ago, the last day of Comic-Con, but my computer froze up on me and I hadn't saved this so I lost it all. I was pretty annoyed (and sad) about it, so I didn't bother to rewrite it until just now. After all, I DO need my first entry for August. Anyways. I'm not much for conventions, of any type. And I know, I know. I'm a huge nerd so naturally I'm supposed to be interested in that, but meh. I just can't muster the energy to care about them. The only thing that does matter are the announcements that come from comic conventions concerning future projects. Now that I care about. And seeing as how the San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest comic convention of the year, there was plenty of stuff announced for me to get excited about. Which leads me to the point of this list--the top ten things announce at the SDCC I'm most excited about. 1) New Krypton - In October, two of my absolute favorite writers team up to cr...
