San Diego Comic Con 2010: Day Two

I'm back with Day Two. Admittedly a little late, but here we go!

X-Men Panel (CBR and Newsarama):

• The X-Men start teaming up with other heroes next year? Finally.
• I don't get the Man Without Fear teasers, but apparently the title's up for grabs, and the X-Men's guy is Gambit.
• Generation Hope focuses on Hope and the new mutants appearing since she's come back to the present. Begins in November. I'm on board, though I've never seen Kieron Gillen's work before.
• Uncanny X-Men #526 starts the arc focusing on the new mutants that appeared recently. This is a prologue to Generation Hope, and a great jumping-on point for me since I haven't read X-Men in a few months.
• ...Deadpool wants to be the World's Greatest Hero?!?! Since when?? They should keep that up, actually...
• "Adjectiveless" X-Men has been placed on my radar now, upon learning that I can see the X-Men interact with the Marvel Universe there.

- The Young Justice trailer! Finally! Here it is:




We were told before this is a "DC Universe show", but now we've got pictures. This JLA seems to be made up of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, Red Tornado, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Black Canary, Captain Atom, Zatara, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, and Martian Manhunter. (Excellent line-up. Seriously.) The trailer looks amazing.

Edit: Some new info has broken. Apparently Robin is Dick Grayson, and Wally West is Kid Flash, and I'm gonna shoot myself in the face. THANKS FOR FUCKING IT ALL UP, DC.

DC Focus: Grant Morrison (Newsarama):

• Grant Morrison on a Wonder Woman title. A year long maxi-series or an OGN would be amazing. Grant excels at re-imagining mythology.
• The project I really want from Grant (Multiversity) is slated for next year. *sighs* Well, I'm CERTAIN it'll still be awesome though.
• You know, Seaguy 1-3 was absolutely insane. I still need to read the second mini-series. Hopefully before the third comes out.
• Placing the New Gods in a universe without the DC heroes was brilliant. Orion alongside Superman leaves Orion looking ridiculous. Their mythology is best when its not cluttered. Also, a Morrison-written Earth-51 book is the first Multiverse book he should write, to set down the rules.
• Hearing Morrison was more of a DC fan as a kid makes me happy. I get slightly bummed when a writer talks about how they enjoyed Marvel more as a child. Like working for DC is the second place prize or something.
• It must be great to be able to inspire people and help them find their careers.
• I find it hard to believe that everything Grant has to say about the Marvel Family can be condensed into 38 pages, but I want to read Thunder World nonetheless.
• The multiversal Justice League. Sounds awesome. Needs a monthly ongoing.
• ....What the? Morrison was on welfare?! They HAVE welfare in Scotland? /Stupid American

Superman: Man of Tomorrow (CBR and Newsarama):

• Still not all that excited for the Superboy title. I'm sorry, but...needs a new writer. And Superboy needs to not be in Smallville.
  
• Action Comics sees Lex up against a different supervillain every issue. I'm amused.
  
• JMS' "Grounded" might possibly work. Though personally I thought New Krypton was better, at least before I realized it was "Zod versus Lane".
• Aaaand there it is. "Smallville is the center of this book." The writer has let his personal inclinations get in the way. I'll read the first arc anyway, but I'm not interested in smalltown adventures. I'm interested in Superboy being back on the map.
• [The Superman offices are] Giving crossovers a break? Gee, really? Considering the last one put Superman sales so low Red Robin outsold SUPERMAN...
• People have a point. He SHOULD be walking across the Earth. They're just too lazy to do the research. But "Grounded" is still a good idea.
• C'mon Stracynski. You're the guy who keeps saying Superman's the greatest hero. Don't make him like Hyperion--he was a dick.
• Team-ups between Superboy and Tim for the new Superboy ongoing? Great. More I see of those, the longer I read the book.
• Superman: Earth One is something I'm highly anticipating, but someone should sit down and discuss the future of these things. Currently, I am curious as to how "Earth One" works. "Earth One" is both an alternate brand of comics while being an alternate universe, which ships in trade paperback form first to signify the difference. But what's the "normal" release date? Will "Wave Two" be more expansive? DC VP, Dan Didio, knows the answer to these questions, but no one asked him.
  

Batman: The Return (CBR and Newsarama):

• Let's see, Grant Morrison's inspired by Brave and the Bold and we get Batman, Inc., an ongoing about Bruce Wayne treating Batman more like a business than a superhero identity. I'M getting ideas about that, now. Thanks a lot Grant.
• Knight and Squire, the mini-series following England's version of Batman and Robin, written by Paul Cornell, is a project I have an interest in for several reasons. The primary one is my love of world-building, though.
• Birds of Prey, featuring a cast of comics' most awesome superheroines, and written by one of the best writers in comics, is one of my favorite comics. I'm glad to have it back too, Gail! Its not just the girls!
  
• Comic fans ignore reality when it counts the most, sometimes. Stephanie Brown (Batgirl) gave up her child at least three years ago. She's not SUPPOSED to run into it. Just because everything in comics is super-connected does not mean that should happen.
• No more Tim (Robin)/Steph (Batgirl)? *saddened* Oh well. Hard to pick up where you left off when your girlfriend pretended she was dead and lied to you about it for a year or so.
• Gail's doing more Lady Blackhawk? Sweet. She's the "neanderthal 1950's male" in a woman's body, turning a trope on its head and making her very endearing.

DC Nation (CBR and Newsarama):

• ....Jeez. There's a person with Diana's new costume already? Is she devoted, or is the costume generic? I can't decide.
• JMS' new Wonder Woman can be used by other people? Okay...but why?
• Ragecat (Dex-Starr) is getting a Valentine's Special? I love you, Geoff Johns. A Saint Walker Birthday Special seems like it would be sad, though...
• Batman's meeting KATHY KANE, the hetero Batwoman? Hm. That could be...something.
• There are still people saying that "Barry Allen's the Flash" crap? Come on. Barry AND Wally are both alive. Has the Flash family ever been better off?
• Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns on the same story? I'm...excited, and terrified. Who let those two work on the same book?!?!
• Young Justice reforming? PAD's still Marvel exclusive. And DC just placed a new team on Teen Titans, so...nil. I'd rather have YJ, but only if it involved the Core 4 and YJ's supporting cast.
• Stephanie Brown (Batgirl) outside of comics? Hm. Cassandra Cain too. It's either Young Justice, Smallville (unlikely), or a brand-new Batman series. That's already been confirmed, but...hrm.
• Flash: Speed Force? Wally, Bart, XS, and Jesse Quick? BOOM! I'm happy, Geoff's happy, and Flash fans can shut up.
• A Flash movie? Only if we can get a Flash cartoon series, too. (Normal cartoon...no CGI, please?)
• ...Arrowette and Wonder Girl will be in the Young Justice cartoon...? Curious decision. Are Tim and Bart far behind then?

Marvel: The Heroic Age (CBR and Newsarama):

• John Romita Jr.'s Avengers...kinda bites. Could be the inks, though. Whoever's going over it is too heavy.
• The McCann-penned Hawkeye and Mockingbird is great. Was hoping for a title to replace Green Arrow & Black Canary. There's something inherently fun to me about two superheroes dating.
• Red Hulk is joining the Avengers. Great. 'Cause everyone wanted Thunderbolt Ross to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
• I don't get the Man Without Fear teasers. An excuse to tell another story? I thought the title was his personal common noun. All the heroes have one. Iron Man is the Armored Avenger. Superman is the Man of Steel. But somehow Nova, Gambit, and Falcon have decided the Man Without Fear deal is up for grabs.
• Invincible Iron Man has been superb, from the first issue. Fraction has turned Tony back into a likable character. He's built up a cast for Tony, took us on a tour around Tony's corner of the Marvel Universe, introduced new villains, made old ones a threat, and invented an armor surpassing his Extremis model, while also rebuilding Stark Enterprises from the ground up. If you aren't reading this--you need to be.
• Fraction's Thor looks great, and the idea of it being all spacey and Kirby like hypes me even more for it.
