Song of the Week - Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa ~ End of Triangle

Image
A friend and I recently finished Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa, the second part alternate retelling of one of my favorite anime series to come out of 2000-2010, Macross Frontier. While I won't spoil the movie itself, considering this song spent three days bouncing around in my head (Valkyrie~...*ahem*), I HAVE to post this song. Be warned, it's 7 minutes, but it's a duet between Sheryl and Ranka, and it's beautiful. I wish I could post the video clip that goes along with it, but again--no spoilers. Go see the movie. There's no excuse for you not to. I know some people would prefer an official copy, but unless you want to watch it raw it's not happening. Go find your eyepatch. (Or your GokaiCellular.) In the meantime, enjoy the song.

Song of the Week - Childish Gambino: Heartbeats

Image
Definitely my favorite song off of CAMP. As much as I love the swag and energy and classic Gambino lines in both "Sunrise" and "Power", this track is just the perfect mix between a good beat and lyrics that are easily relate-able and resonate with anyone that's been in any kind of situation like this. Don't let the beat and the chorus fool you; you can almost feel the anger in Donald's voice as he sings this song, with each verse going deeper into the mind of a man who's been abandoned by a girl he was truly in love with because of his commitment to his work. The last line is hilarious, but it's also kind of symbolic of the ridiculous thought processes of men in general: So many guys have either stayed with women or gone back to women because we were simply incapable of giving up the sex, regardless of the mental or emotional havoc that gets wreaked upon us.

Song of the Week: Childish Gambino - L.E.S.

Image
Gambino is a Mastermind. I played this song at least a dozen times back when it was just a one minute clip on Vimeo. To hear the full thing is almost like bliss and I can't stop playing it. Can't say its my favorite track off CAMP (which has a First Listen on NPR), but it's definitely pretty far up there. I find hipster girls both amusing and kinda hot (the look at least), so I can't help vibing to this song. Next week I'll probably throw up my favorite, but I'll be honest: I can't get this album out of my head right now so favorite is relative.

Song of the Week: Phonte feat. Elzhi - Not Here Anymore

Image
Holy crap. Phonte and Elzhi BODIED this track. I know Jumping in Headfirst usually doesn't mention "hip hop" without the words "Childish Gambino" following in the sentence, but this site is about dopeness, and this track personifies it. Enjoy.

Song of the Week: Masami Okui - DEAD or ALIVE

Image
Her majesty Masami Okui has released another album, Self Satisfaction II*. Unsurprisingly, I fucking love it. But I'll spare you my gushing over the thing and just let you hear one of the tracks off it. It's got a nice, energetic feel to it, and even though it's not my favorite song thus far (Cosmic Dance probably stole that), it's still pretty good. Song below: * Even though I hate sequels. Edit: A bit of research has shown this is apparently a cover album. Interesting. That explains the sequel thing.

Song of the Week Extra: Childish Gambino

Image
If haters are wondering why CG is popular--this is why. He brings a frank honesty to hip-hop that we just don't normally get. Hearing the guy be so real and so honest on the mic resonates with you regardless of what background you come from. And if it doesn't, choke yourself.

Song of the Week: Tokyo Jihen - Handsome Sugite

Image
I've never been a huge Tokyo Jihen guy, but hearing this song I had to give it a little play on JiH. Enjoy.

Song of the Week: BACK-ON - Connectus and selfish

Image
A new single by BACK-ON. Kinda depressed that their rapper looks like that... Nice song though.

Song of the Week: Extra - J. Cole feat. Childish Gambino - Who Dat?

Image
Like I was really going to let a CG verse slip by. Yeah, right. Especially not when he's over half this song. Sick. If this is what CG's bringing on Camp, I'll be listening to his album another year straight.

Song of the Week: Traphik - Chillin Here in the Atmosphere

Image
Traphik could be big if he ever got mad serious about rap like CG did. Anyway, I like rap songs that go off the accepted path of subjects for rap. This one has a real chill beat and I kinda know where he's coming from.

Song of the Week: Mic Banditz - So High So Fine

Chill song for the first week of school. Stay relaxed folks, and remember it's just fifteen weeks. Anyway, this is by a favorite hip-hop group of mine, the Mic Banditz, off the album Johnny Astro and the Diamond Crooks. Enjoy.

Song of the Week: m-flo - What It Is

"It makes me blow how you talkin' smack 'bout us, we paid them dues/It ain't just what you see/truth lies beneath, it's the chemistry..." Verbal, Takahashi Taku, and Lisa kept me listening to hip-hop when the only other good thing out was Kanye West. They had a cool, early 90's vibe to their first two albums that kept them on repeat in my CD player--and this is one of their best songs.

Song of the Week: 88-Keys and Phonte

Image
Another reason why I'm a huge fan of Phonte. Dude keeps it real when he talks about relationships. "When you told me you was on the patch...I ain't know you was talking 'bout the NICOTINE patch, motherfucker!!!" ROFL.

Song of the Week: 88-Keys and Kanye West - Stay Up (Viagra)

Image
This song appeared in my head for some reason. Gotta share it with everyone. I miss when Kanye was relevant. Oh well. Song is still dope. Enjoy.

Song of the Week: Childish Gambino - Bonfire

Image
I'm guessing CG performed at San Diego Comic Con. 'Cause this happened: It's the full version of the track he currently has up on his site. I prefer studio tracks to lives unless I'm actually there, so it's a testament to how much I like this song that I'm posting it here. Also... "Made the beat then murdered it--Casey Anthony." There's got to be some kind of achievement you unlock when you keep "going there" to make dope lines. Platinum Trophy: Came On Your Comfort Zone. Lyrics for those who have trouble hearing the song can be found with annotations on RapGenius.

Song of the Week: Z-Trip: Breakfast Club

Image
Little explicit in the lyrics, but for cereal fans and cartoon fans? Perfect song. I, love to eat cereal...when I'm watching my cartoons...

Song of the Week: Bo Burnham: Oh Bo

Image
Occasionally it gets old being told, "Hey Sage, you should be more like us." My ultimate rejection of this is to continue embracing what makes me different. Speaking of different.... Make the ladies say..."Ohhhh...."

Song of the Week: Jeremy Kay - Have it All

Image
All jokes and trolling aside: I love this song.

Song of the Week

Image
"And I can't go for that, nigga Hall and Oates." A little CG humor. (Giving the guy a break for now while I re-familiarize myself with the rest of my music collection, starting with my boy mc chris and these fellows.) May have done this song before...but it's worth a re-post.

Song of the Week: YT Cracker - Warez Loader

I was wondering whether I should continue the Song of the Day deal, and at first I wasn't sure, but I decided what I'll do (for now), is downgrade it to the Song of the Week. I still wouldn't have done it though, if I hadn't found this particular gem from my high school days. This is now SageTV's theme song. Enjoy.
