Day 1 So Far: Dragon Age, Project Spark and More

Image
While I'm waiting for the last press conference of the day, let's take a look at some of the games that have been announced or given trailers so far.  Project Spark I know this is a Microsoft game.  No, I haven't sold out (especially since nobody's buying in to my product) and no I don't support the draconian, internet fascism MS is pretending to be next-gen gaming.  But I still watched their press conference because it's never a bad idea to be aware of things. Looking like a cooler version of Little Big Planet, Project Spark is another one of those "create your own experience" games, only this one is taking advantage of the new hardware to go even further in terms of options and gameplay.  It looks like it has the potential to be a load of fun, and should it ever come to PS4 (doubtful), I'd definitely give it a try. Watch_Dogs We all knew about this game, but it honestly does just look better every time I see it.  This time I coul...

The Pointe Crew Episode 21: Pre-E3

Image
Coming out literally within hours of the Microsoft conference and the start of E3, the guys at the Pointe Crew got a pretty good pre-E3 show done.  I'm not in this one, and that's why you saw the word vomit yesterday, but this is excellent too.

Pre-E3 Hopes and More

Image
Its that time of year again.  Everyone's doing E3 predictions and hopes, and I'm no different.  I'm a little late with mine, so to apologize let's just jump right into it.  Hopes: We learn more about Batman: Arkham Origins. We're all completely aware of this game, but that doesn't mean I don't want to know more about the game.  We've known about it for a couple months but we've yet to see any gameplay.  How does this younger, less experienced Batman fight?   Is he faster?  Does he rely on even cooler gadgets?   And Arkham Origins has the one thing I've been excited about since 2007 when they first released Arkham Asylum : a non-shitty Gotham.  I just bought the GOTY edition of Arkham City and while I totally get what they were going for, its more than a little weird that every time I hit the streets there's just more criminals to beat up.   And its like they took up half the city so it makes you wonder what Batman's e...

Forever Crossovers

Image
The information for this is all over the internet, but I pride myself on making sure you don't have to leave this place to get relevant information on an article of mine (and if you do I at least link you), so let's go over it: Spinning out of July and August's Trinity War (a crossover between Justice League, Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark) is an seven-issue event called Forever Evil by writer Geoff Johns and artist David Finch.  Based on what little we know, Forever Evil is an event in which the bad guys have won.  The heroes seem to be nowhere to be found, and to represent that for the first month of Forever Evil we will have Villains Month.  In Villains Month we'll have 56 issues of comics in which the villains have replaced the heroes, complete with fancy 3D covers that have the normal hero name crossed out with the focal villain's name stamped over it all evil-like. There will also be three five issue spin-off mini-series to supp...

The Dangers of Corporate Comics

Ever since I was a little boy, I've loved superhero comics.  There's something about their bright colors, the heroic exploits, the crazy ideas and the ever-changing and ever-growing narrative that has always had my attention.  Even today--I'll give creator owned comics a shot now and again, but they have to be incredibly interesting to catch my eye, and even then my heart is still with superheroes. That's why it saddens me to read things like this Bleeding Cool interview with writer Paul Jenkins, which discusses in detail all the horrible experiences he had while working for DC during the earliest part of their "New 52" initiative. It's a story that isn't at all out of place these days, with so many creators leaving DC for similar reasons.  It began with Greg Rucka and Mark Waid leaving DC to work for Marvel (and in Greg's case, leaving Marvel as well to do indy work), and has continued fairly consistently since about six months in to the New 52...

Battle Rap Wednesdays: Charlie Clips vs. Tony D

Image
The first time I saw Tony D was when he battled Real Deal.  This was a terrible look, as he somehow managed to forget his verses all three rounds while Real Deal was throwing out haymakers.  Still, he makes a good second impression, going bar for bar with one of my favorites in the battling game, Charlie Clips.  The lines about "stop with the five minute rounds, you ain't that nice with it" and the general shots at URL's disgustingly long battles (most of these cats DON'T deserve five minutes) were on point.   He still couldn't pull of a win to me though.  Don't get me wrong, Clips makes some mistakes in his battles (for instance in this one: what's with all these basketball lines while you're in the UK?  They watch soccer, make some bars about that shit.), but overall he's just one of the top tier guys in the game.  His main weakness is his lack of experience but honestly that's changing now.  He's had 2 battles this year so fa...

Bottom of the Pile 2: May 29, 2013

Image
I'm crazy late with this but I spent all weekend working on my speech, so I apologize.  Now that I'm finally out of class (for like, a month) I can relax again so here we go.  Bottom of the Pile 2. ...What's sad about this is just how few comics found their way to the Bottom, but then this is a fifth week kind of deal so its kind of to be expected. Earth-2 Annual What I hate the most about this comic is just how good it is.  James Robinson, when given characters that don't already have fleshed out backstories, is a fantastic writer and Cafu and Julius Gopez bring this book to life with glorious visuals of this alternate DC Universe Earth where the Big Three don't rule everything ever.  Unfortunately it doesn't really matter because Robinson is gone in 4 months, which is stupid because this Annual apparently hit the top five out of the books sold last week .  You don't let someone like that go, especially when they're doing such a great job build...
